Ten Centuries of Women Playwrights serves
over 3,000 New York City students in grades 1-12. This intensive program for male
and female students exceeds the newly imposed standards and assessments
for arts education. It is an inter-disciplinary literary, playwriting
and acting program in which theater artists from the Women’s
Project are in residence at the school, working in collaboration with
classroom teachers. In addition, guest playwrights, actors and directors
participate in an on-going basis throughout the residency.
Students
in Ten Centuries improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking
skills as they focus on plays written by women from diverse cultures.
Guided, critical discussions include consideration of each play's
historic context, dramatic structure, and use of language. Students
are given vocabulary, creative writing, and historical research assignments,
and eventually write their own original scenes. Through rewriting
and editing, the class begins to prepare their plays for performance.
The
course culminates in a final production where the students perform
their own work at the Julia Miles Theater on West 55th Street in Manhattan.
Students are also invited to attend special student matinees during
WP's mainstage season, as well as special readings and other performative
events featuring professional artists.
Our
recent educational partners include Brooklyn Academy, Brooklyn High
School for Teaching, Bushwick High School, the High School for Fashion
Industries, Humanities High School, Independence High School, Richard
R. Green High School for Teaching, Queens Academy High School and
Science Skills Extension High School; Intermediate Schools 50,126,
132, 318 and the Renaissance Military and Leadership Academy; as
well as, PS 46, 122, 142, 257, 304 and the Muscota New School. Classroom
teachers consistently report that they see a marked improvement in
their students’ communications skills, and they attribute this
progress to the high-standards set by WP's Ten Centuries program,
where learning, team work, and creative expression are deeply valued.
