In 2006-2007, Lab members claimed rights to WP's entire season, with two world premiere productions on our mainstage, The Julia Miles Theater: Lab member Kate Walat's VICTORIA MARTIN: MATH TEAM QUEEN, and Lab member Lear deBessonet's TRANSFIGURES. The site-specific production of GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUND$, produced in association with Arts>World Financial Center, was entirely written, directed, and line-produced by Lab members. In addition, in December 2006, WP received its first artist commissioning grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, which allowed WP to name Lab member Saviana Stanescu its Playwright-in-Residence for 2007, while she works on a new play, ALIENS.

Truly, the WP Labs are about creating an artistic home--a place where members share work, hone craft, ask advice, see their work realized, and springboard themselves into the next step of their careers. Current Lab members were selected for the program that began in September 2006 and runs through June 2008. Click here to apply for the 2008-2010 Labs.

PLAYWRIGHTS LAB

Playwrights Lab members workshop plays in progress; participate in guided discussions with prominent artistic directors, agents, and other industry professionals that members may not have access to otherwise (previous meetings have featured visits from Paula Vogel, Maria Irene Fornes, Morgan Jenness and Beth Blickers from Abrahms Artists Agency and others); and collaborate with Lab Directors and Producers on new artistic adventures.

"The Playwrights Lab at the Women's Project is one of the best things to happen to my career this past year. The connection I've felt both to the Women's Project, as an artistic home, and to the writers and directors in the Lab when I encounter them in other theatrical contexts, has had a significant impact on my life and work as an emerging playwright."
--Kathryn Walat, Playwrights Lab Member and Leader

“The sense of community and support we have at WP is unparalleled and invaluable. We are a diverse group of writers and directors with tremendous admiration for one another. In an industry with increasingly smaller resources, it's wonderful to have a place that provides us with a home in which to develop new work, over an extended period of time. It's an exciting place to be, with the stature of its history, and the freshness of its many new voices!"
--Cybele Pascal, Playwrights Lab Alumna

DIRECTORS LAB

Established in 1980, the Directors Lab has successfully changed the course of many female directors' careers during decades when opportunities for this group have been limited. This intensive program creates networking opportunities with theater professionals, and provides a vital community for cultivating the craft and advancing the careers of exceptional directors.

"It is a rare and wonderful feeling to be in a collaborative room with fellow directors. The Directors Lab is not a place where people are vying for opportunities - it is truly about learning from one another - and creating a community for the exchange of ideas. And the partnership with the Playwrights Lab is ideal! I have met some wonderfully passionate and creative writers, and I am confident that we will all continue to cook up some great projects and collaborations with one another in years to come."
- Daniella Topol, Directors Lab Member and Leader

PRODUCERS LAB

The Producers Lab, which kicked off in September 2006, works to extend the influence of promising female theater producers by offering opportunities to collaborate with theater artists and learn tricks of the trade from industry professionals. Armed with practical tools and powerful connections, Producers Lab members develop and produce selected WP events and their own pet projects.
