Women's Project, in association with South
Coast Repertory, presents
How The
World Began
by Catherine Trieschmann
directed by Daniella Topol
designed by Clint Ramos,
Brian H Scott and Darron L West
with Justin Kruger, Adam LeFevre and Heidi Schreck
"An insightful and compassionate drama. The playwright is unafraid of portraying difficult women who make mistakes."
Adam Feldman, Time Out"Three fine performances in contrasting hues. Directed with a keen focus on the specificity of character by Daniella Topol."
Charles Isherwood, The New York Times
"Three fine performances. Justin Kruger catches the depth of Micah's emotionally scrambled turmoil. Adam LeFevre, bulky and twinkly, offers a wonderfully nuanced mix of Santa Claus sweetness, sorrow, and menace. Heidi Schreck, whose ability to hold center stage is no surprise at this point, slips ingeniously past the rigidity of the role as written by turning each hardening of Susan's position into an increased cry of pain." Michael Feingold, The Village Voice
"An intelligent new play. Catherine Trieschmann provides a thought-provoking look at the complexity of people who find it impossible to empathize with viewpoints not their own."
Jennifer Ferrar, Associated Press
"Trieschmann amps up the intensity with a steady and pitiless hand. She's a playwright, and a damned good one. Taking those duties seriously, she funnels us toward a real neck-snap of a conclusion — the earth shakes a little."
Scott Brown, New York Magazine
"Catherine Treishmann’s delicately balanced and stirring new play, directed with grace by Daniella Topol. Captivating performances by the cast—most notably, a brilliant turn by Adam LeFevre. Rare and refreshing intelligence."
The New Yorker
Following the stellar success of her play CROOKED
at WP in 2008, Catherine Trieschmann returns with a
new play about Susan, a high school biology teacher who
leaves Manhattan for a job in Plainview, Kansas. Susan
is ready for more than a little culture shock, but she’s not
prepared for the firestorm that engulfs the town when she
makes an off-handed comment about the origins of the
universe.

We Play For The Gods

June 1-23, 2012

Ellen Stewart—legendary founder of La Mama—blew open the doors of dramatic expression and gave voice to an extraordinary and diverse generation of theater artists. Inspired by her words “We play for the gods and in return, they play for us,” the sixteen artists of the WP Lab are now conceiving and creating a new theatrical event with wide arms, open hearts, and a nod to the immortal.
The Lab is the artistic heart of Women’s Project, and a free, two-year, artistic residency program for early and mid career playwrights, directors, and producers. The artists of the 2010-2012 Lab have been produced on stages around the globe, garnered countless awards, and brought to life over 150 productions. They are our present and our future.
