TEN CENTURIES
OF WOMEN PLAYWRIGHTS WP kicked off this new series in the
Fall 2006 with two wildly different works from the canon of women's
plays... After diving into the dramas of Hrotsvita of Gandersheim, a 10th century German nun and the first known woman playwright, and finding eerie echoes of the contemporary Christian youth movement, where girls wear purity rings, get to be virgins twice, and speak in tongues while thrilling to forbidden pop songs, WP is proud to announce that THE HROTSVITA PLAYS continues in development. Stay tuned for the next incarnation of this daring drama.
Virgin. Wife. Whore. Which one do we adore? Come ramble the streets and bedrooms of Rome with three women who make a different choice. On the run from arranged marriages and the nunnery, Marcella, Cornelia and Laura Lucretia are after the men of their dreams by any means necessary! Undercover adventures and mistaken identities, the wrong door and the right bed are just the beginning of this raunchy swashbuckling comedy of intrigue. Rebecca Patterson, Artistic Director of The Queen’s Company--known for innovative productions of classical plays featuring all-female ethnically diverse casts--teams up with Aphra Behn, that delicious diva of 17th century naughtiness, who became the first professional female writer after a brief stint in debtors prison.
The TEN CENTURIES OF WOMEN PLAYWRIGHTS staged reading series will continue in Spring 2007! Check back for updates...
